Why do cold symptoms appear to get worse in the evening?

Is there any biological reason – or do noses feel more blocked and throats more sore due to the dryness of centrally heated houses or because our bodies are tired after a day’s work? Hope I’ve not answered my own question!

I think its because you are more tired…

  3. liverpool lou says:

the cold air is colder at night and your body temperture goes down and you start to need rest

  4. Bex says:

I’ve always felt worse right when I wake up actually.

Although many people have said the same things you have, that they feel worse at night.

I think it’s because our bodies are tired and requiring rest, the colder air at night is harsher on our already hurting lungs, noses and throats. I don’t know about the way everyone thinks but it might be a psychological thing too, here we have been sick all day, and we’re fed up and we might just be naturally inclined to think, “I’m never getting better, in fact I’m getting worse!”.

    I am just guessing though.

  5. ♥ Black Adder says:

You did answer your own question.

Being up during the day, even if you are not doing anything very strenuous, stresses your body and does not allow your body to fight off the attacking virus as well as it can when you are sleeping.

That is why “they” say drink lots of fluids (to keep body hydrated and flush out toxins) and rest (to let your immune system fight the virus).

Think about how people who have been very seriously injured are sometimes put into drug induced comas. It is so that the body will, hopefully, heal itself.
