i had some blood taken to test for a virus as i had been quite ill, but not the run of the mill flu symptoms, when the results came back it says i test positive for influenza A. Is this swine flu?

No way to tell for sure unless they do further testing to specify which type. Some seasonal flu strains are also influenza A. Earlier the assumption was all A/H1N1 cases were swine flu but as the new season ramps up it could be hard to tell.
