I was placed on levothyroxine 50mg about 8 months ago and then took off again, because different doctors had different opinions on my level (this happened twice?)
Now I have been placed on them again, and have noticed each time I have been on this Medication I always get a sore throat about 3 days into starting the treatment? But I am told it is just a coincidence, well this “coincidence” has happened every time.
Anyone else had the same problem.
Thank you Gary. No I have seen nobody else, only my GP. The sore throat seems to be only in the location of the Thyroid Gland? I do suffer from Acid reflux but do not feel this is the reason for my sore throat.
This is tricky, as from what you say as this has occured 3 times, then co-incidence is unlikely. However all I can tell you is that ‘sore throats’ are not among the side effects listed in the British National Formulary for this hormone. In addition it is chemically the same as the hormone your thyroid gland should be producing anyway. Whether you need it or not I cannot say, but I would advise you to go with the opinion of an Endocrinologist, rather than a GP, if you have seen one. However the decision should be a straightforward one for any experienced doctor. If it turns out you really don’t need it, then your problem is solved.
Good luck.
