Is it safe to get seasonal flu vaccine during pregnancy?

February 4th, 2011 | Flu Symptoms and Signs Scroll Down To Read Answers To The Question

I’m booked to get one in 2 week’s time, but in two minds whether or not to go ahead with it.. Has anyone got any experiences to share please?
Thanks everyone for your inputs!

I am only worried if the vaccine would cause any birth or nervous system abnormalities to my baby as I read somewhere it might affect baby’s nervous system.. so I’m very apprehensive as it’s my first baby

Good luck to all those expecting!

Yes, it is safe, and recommended. I got mine when I was 13 weeks along. I am the one who asked about it, and my doctor said definitely! I got one the same day. I slo got it because I have asthma and get one every year.

It is better to get the vaccine than to get the flu. Go for it!

  2. Danica says:

Yep. After your first trimester it is completely safe! I get one every year because I have asthma. I got one the day before I delievered my daughter in 2008, and I got one about a month ago and am due in 10 days.

Both my kids (age 5 and 2) get one each year too!

Keep the appt.! You will pass the antibodies on to the baby before they are born!

  3. Pennsylvania Girl says:

It’s safe and recommended. Getting the flu while pregnant is not only unpleasant, it can be dangerous to you and the baby. Plus the flu shot will help protect your baby after he/she is born (babies can’t get a flu shot until 6 months).

  4. irining says:

It’s perfectly safe. Doctors actually recommend it because when you’re pregnant your immune system is down so you’re more susceptible to infection. It’s okay; it won’t hurt baby. :)

  5. Pickle says:

If you are in the UK you will find few places who will do it privately while you are pregnant because it isn’t actually 100% safe. There are risks to the baby but after the first trimester these risks are slim.

However this year they’re giving it to pregnant women for free on the NHS (contact your local doctors surgery) because it contains swine flu too and they believe this may show up again big time this winter. They’ve decided that the benefits far outweigh the risks.

I’m almost 25 weeks pregnant and still trying to decided whether to have it done but I most likely will.

  6. sammyhelfant says:

Yes, it is safe and highly recommended. I have never gotton one before, but since I am pregnant, I am going to get one this year. Just make sure when you get it that is is mercury fee and has no live virus in it.

  7. Rhianna does Medicine Year 1 says:

There is no evidence that the influenza vaccine causes harm to the mother or unborn child. Vaccines have been given to pregnant women safely for many years. There is no reason why the vaccine should damage the baby’s nervous system.
