The most common difference is that flu often has a higher temperature. Simillarly you will feel a lot, lot worse with flu than you will a cold. A pharmacist once described the difference to me as thus: “If someone pinned a £20 note on the wall opposite your sickbed for you and you got up to collect it, you have a cold; if you felt too ill to get up and could’nt be bothered to get the money you have flu”. The point being that with a cold you might feel a bit rough, but with the flu you will literally feel like you are at death’s door. With flu you will often feel run down for days or even weeks after the initial symptoms have worn away, but with a cold you usually feel fine once the symptoms pass away.
A lot of people often incorrectly say they have flu when what they actually have is a cold. This often leads to a lot of confusion between people as to what is a cold and what is flu. The same pharmacist who gave the above quote tells me that whilst most people will pick up at least a couple of colds a year, the vast majority of people won’t get flu more than a couple of times in their entire lifetime.
As for getting rid of colds, there is no miracle cure sadly. It’s basically just a question of sitting it out, although paracetamol should ease the symptoms somewhat.
with a normal cold you feel crap and with swine flu you can’t move out of bed!
The best way is just to realize that it’s just a cold because swine flu a bunch of BS. You have a better chance of dying in a car crash than you do of dying from swine flu.
