Horrendously bad cough (dry), what can I do to stop it?

I current have Flu, possibly swine flu but I’m at the later stages of it and I have a very very bad cough. Its so bad that every medicine I have used for it doesn’t work including a very strong dry cough medicine. It’s worse when I try to sleep and I haven’t slept for over 2 days now because of it.

I can’t go out of the house because of the flu so please don’t say see a doctor and I don’t have any of these fancy herbal drinks or remedies so please don’t suggest those. I have tried the hot steam thing but its not that effective.

Any ideas please? :(

  1. Nikita x says:

hot water with honey and lemon works a treat :)

  2. Kernow Lady says:

Hot lemon and honey. Just let it trickle down the back of your throat. Take during the day and also during the night.
Have had the same many times.
    Get well soon.
Codeine tablets reduce the cough reflex.

  3. dave says:

    nikita x is right.

hot water with lemon and honey, its amazing

  4. lolly says:

Firstly, sorry you have this horrible flu! Here are a few remedies I found have helped.

Mix 3 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 cup honey, and 1/4 cup warm water and take two teaspoons daily.

Peel a small piece of fresh ginger. Sprinkle some salt on it and chew.

Add a gram of turmeric powder to a teaspoon of honey

This is very useful for a dry cough if you are not allergic to nuts, soak almonds overnight. Remove their skin. Make a paste of these almonds with little butter and sugar.

Don’t know if you have these ingredients, hope you do!

  5. star says:

covonia is always good for our family (you can get night covonia too these days), but try sleeping with pillows behind your back so your much more upright. if it is so bad you do need to get a doctor called out to see you, you won’t have to go anywhere. poor you :-(

  6. Lord_Darkclaw says:

Have you tried throat spray? Chloroseptic is expensive but very strong; it’s not going to cure your cough but it might relieve the symptoms of inflammation.

  7. Brambles says:

Try lying down on your front instead of your back as it can help bring the mucus up, or ask someone to give you a back massage.

    How about a hot toddie.

    1 part wiskey or brandy
    1 part hot water
    lots of sugar to taste..

Will help relax the spasms a little and will cheer you up.
