Flu-like symptoms after acupuncture session – what’s happening ?

February 6th, 2011 | Flu Symptoms and Signs Scroll Down To Read Answers To The Question

I’ve recently been getting treatment of acupuncture for my lower back (i have a disc bulge that causes sciatica). I have had 3, 10 min sessions of this and before each session we work on physio moves and she does some massage to release the muscle tension around my spine. The first time i did acupuncture i felt fine and the next day felt nauseas and had a headache. That seemed to clear up and 4 days later i had another physio/acupuncture session and this time she put a few more needles in along my back, and gluteus. This was a great session, i felt very energized afterwards and no headaches or anything. Basically the last session did me in, i was having some neck stiffness this time and she massaged it then put 2 needles around my neck and then in my back again and i don’t know what happened but I don’t want to go back because it’s been 3 days now and i feel like i have the worst flu ever, i have swollen glands all of a sudden, the worst headache that won’t go away with any type of pain medication and my whole body feels like it’s run a marathon i feel extremely sore everywhere. I feel extremely warm, no fever though, i checked. My whole body feels hot inside. This definitely isn’t normal and i want to know what’s happening!!!!

I’ve been told that this is a form of detoxification, but i’m concerned at how ill i feel and it’s not lessening.

Any advice i would appreciate.

  1. Curious George, C.Ac says:

It is possible that you were in the preliminary stages of a cold or the flu when you had this third treatment. The treatment may have caused the cold to express fully.

You should contact the acupuncturist and explain what is going on. They are more fully versed in your health history, current status, and what they actually did for your treatment.

  2. evirustheslaye says:

acupuncture doesn’t work and “detoxing” is based on a childish understanding of chemistry. go to a doctor.

  3. Phoenix says:

Acupuncture DOES work and curious George is probably right in what he says.

You should certainly contact your acupuncturist on Monday and discuss it with her.

    EDIT.
I spent years studying Chines medicine. Gary quite clearly has not.
To say that Acupuncture which, together with the use of herbs and exercise, has kept the Chinese healthy for thousands of years, is no more than a placebo, is nonsense.

  4. Gary Y says:

It certainly wasn’t the acupuncture – it does not infect you with a virus. In any case, acupuncture is known to be a placebo treatment only. Furthermore “detoxification” is absolute quackery – “detox” has no meaning outside of the clinical treatment of drug addiction and poisoning.

    From Wiki:
“Certain approaches in alternative medicine claim to remove “toxins” from the body through herbal, electrical or electromagnetic treatments (such as the Aqua Detox treatment). These toxins are undefined and have no scientific basis, making the validity of such techniques questionable. There is no evidence for toxic accumulation in these cases, as the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials including metabolic wastes.”

dirty needle you got aids sorry

  6. Tesco - very little help says:

I have been having acupuncture on my shoulder and back and it doesn’t leave you feeling like you have the flu.

I do feel a bit sore afterwards and the massage that she gives me is quite hard, but it feels much better after the initial soreness has worn off.

Perhaps you have a mild viral infection.
