Aren’t people underestimating the swine flu?

January 17th, 2011 | Flu Symptoms and Signs Scroll Down To Read Answers To The Question

a lot of flu pandemics have started out mild in the spring and summer even the Spanish flu took this path it got worse in the autumn and winter – yet people are saying oh we will be all right – I don’t think we should panic at the moment but we should be prepared for what ever may happen we think we are so untouchable – but we are not. It’s just a waiting game – I am not saying half the population will die but we have to give this illness some respect

  1. Jason says:

I was concern about the swine flu as well, but I checked the fact on the center for disease control website and this one http://www.symptomsswineflu.org/about/ and it help to put my mind at rest.

  2. paz the mini joker <3 says:

i totally agree, they are getting too worried. This happened with the bird flu and the mad cow disease, they did the same thing as the swine flu.

  3. B00M says:

The media is publicising this so much no one knows what the truth is.
I’m Australian and on the front cover on the newspaper it said “3 australians confirmed of swine flu..” and then soon later i discover they aren’t even in australia at the moment and are in other countries. They say taking a normal flu vaccine could possibly help in the swine flu, as it is now spreading human to human. They say the more it travels, the weaker it becomes. It sounds like we are prepared, we have screens to tell whether someone has this flu or not, masks are usually provided.
Just remember to frequently wash your hands.

  4. BARCA says:

    No, not really

  5. steven says:

Too right sensationalism has caused too much panic which causes its own problem with work absences and GPs and hospitals having to deal with ‘sniffles’. You are right that the longer it sticks round and if still around in autumn, winter time the disease will be a lot stronger making vaccines pretty much useless making us not as well prepared as we are this time round.

  6. Andrea says:

I agree. Everyones going so OTT and over reacting over 80 people have dyed including a 28month old baby!
But if its not near your country your fine so stop worry, just dont let people cought or sneeze around you and you’ll be fine! Its pretty simple to be honest, but people are dying!

  7. David J says:

If anything I think it’s been overestimated. From what’s coming out the last couple of days it’s virulence seems to have been greatly exagerated.

  8. Rhianna Returns says:

No not really. The symptoms at the moment are quite mild (although a little more than just ordinary seasonal flu). From what I have read (anyone please correct me if this is not the case), most of the ones who died in Mexico were living in slums and were likely immunocompromised to begin with.

They will produce a vaccine probably by the end of the summer. The main concern is not really this bout of swine flu (although any pandemic is a concern), one of the bigger concerns is if a more virulent form of swine flu returns in the winter. Although vaccines will be developed, it will also mean that less normal seasonal flu vaccines are being manufactured.

This whole swine flu business has been completely blown out of proportion by the media. People are turning up to A&E with hayfever for christ sakes!

  9. Rachel G says:

I think we should all shut up about this bloody illness, it’s getting pretty annoying.

If you catch it, sadly – then you’re ill. That’s it. Deal with it. It doesn’t mean you’re going to die – you’re just ill. Sure, some people may die from it but that’s the same with every illness for the catching.

If you don’t catch it – woopdedoo.

How does anyone prepare for an illness? Honestly? All these “precautions” like washing our hands & covering our mouths – we’re meant to be doing that anyway! Other than trying to stay in good health (which we’re also meant to be doing anyway) then there’s very little else we can do about it.
