I’m pregnant and I am thinking of having the flu jab but I am worried. Have any other pregnant ladies had it recently and what is your experience? How long have they been giving it out to pregnant women? Is it safe? I will of course ask these questions to my GP but I just want to know other peoples’ experience. Thanks
It’s been given to pregnant women since about the 1940s.
Not only are you at high risk of influenza complications including death while pregnant, but your child is not old enough to be vaccinated against influenza until they are six months old so it is YOUR job to protect them by being vaccinated against influenza and having your entire household vaccinated against influenza. Your entire household should also get vaccinated against pertussis (whooping cough) now if they’ve not had the vaccine within the last 5-10 years (even if they’ve had pertussis, protection is NOT lifelong!), and you should talk to your doctor about either vaccinating now or getting the vaccine immediately after your child is born.
You and your household are your child’s most likely source of exposure to pertussis and influenza, both of which are potentially fatal illnesses, especially in infants. Yes, there’s a risk of side effects from vaccines, but that is absolutely incomparable to the risks of not being vaccinated.
